Two of the most common ways to have your carpets professionally cleaned are Steam Cleaning and Dry Cleaning. While both aim to remove stains and dirt from your carpet, they are fairly different methods, each with their own benefits and disadvantages. We take a brief look at these here.

Steam Cleaning – In the steam cleaning process, hot water (and cleaning substances) are driven into the depths of your carpet with high pressure, as this happens, the cleaning agents break down the dirt and pushes it out, the soiled, soapy liquid is then extracted.

Pre-treatments are often required when Steam Carpet Cleaning to assist in the breakdown of oily stains and to release some of the surface tension. This method is well liked by Carpet Cleaning Professionals and Carpet Manufacturers alike due to its deep clean bringing up dirt that isn’t visible but buried deep with the fibres.

Steam Carpet Cleaning however, does leave your carpet wet, needing anywhere between 4 and 24 hours to dry completely. Its recommended that during this time, that the carpet not be used.

Dry Cleaning – The dry carpet cleaning process uses dry chemicals dispersed onto your carpet which is then activated by water being sprayed on top. While this essentially means its not a completely ‘dry’ clean, the water added is minimal and only enough to activate the cleaning agents. After this step, the carpet is vacuumed with a powerful machine which lifts the dirt and stains out of your carpet. Carpet Dry Cleaning has a much shorter drying time allowing you to walk upon it within 2-4 hours and is known to remove tougher stains than steam cleaning due to harsher chemicals being used.

The downside to Carpet Dry Cleaning is its inability to penetrate deeply into the carpet, due to this reason, carpets with a  warranty usually require that they are Steam Cleaned as opposed to Dry Cleaned.

Considering the reason you’ve decided to have your carpets professionally cleaned will assist in choosing whether you go for Steam or Dry Cleaning. If in doubt, consult your local professional Carpet Cleaner.
