DIY Carpet Stain Remedies

While using a professional is always the most recommended way to remove stains from your carpet sometimes our budget or circumstances require immediate attention and intervention to remove the stain ourselves.

We’ve gathered some handy tips on household products or items that may assist in removing unsightly stains from your carpets. Always test these on a small section first to ensure there are no bad reactions!

Beer – A staple of many Aussie fridges beer can help remove those impossible tea and coffee stains but you can lift it out by pouring a bit of beer right on top. Rub the beer lightly into the material and the stain should disappear. You may need to repeat a few times to completely remove the stain.

Ammonia – Mix 1 cup of clear Ammonia with 2 litres of warm water. Use this to remove stains from carpet and upholstery by sponging them out with a non-coloured sponge. Let it dry then repeat if necessary.

Vinegar – A master product for cleaning and stain removal, there are a few different concoctions you can try

  • Dissolve 2 Tablespoons of Salt in a half Cup of White Vinegar. Rub into light carpet stains, let it dry then vacuum up.
  • Using the mixture and method above, add 2 Tablespoons of Borax for large or darker stains.
  • Mix 1 Tablespoon of Vinegar with 1 Tablespoon of Corn Flour to make a paste and use a dry cloth to rub into ground in dirt and tough stains.
  • For paint spillages, a mixture of 1.5 teaspoons of vinegar, 1.5 teaspoons of laundry detergent and two cups of water can be used to sponge away the paint (before it dries) then rinse with cold water.
  • Fruit stains can be taken care of by mixing 1 Tablespoon of laundry detergent with 1.5 Tablespoons of White Vinegar and 2 Cups of water. Add the mixture to the stain and blot to remove.
  • For those pesky tea and coffee stains, mix equal parts of white vinegar and water and blot to remove.

Shaving Cream

  • To remove Juice from carpet, blot the juice and then pat it with a wet sponge. Next spray shaving cream on the stain and wipe clean with a damp sponge.
  • To remove Oil or Grease stains, work some shaving cream into the stain, leave it to dry then rub with a soft, damp cloth.

Baking Soda – another champion product for cleaning. Baking soda will clean and deodorise Vomit and Urine from your carpet. Clean up the excess as best as you can then pour Baking Soda over the area, and lightly let it dry then vacuum it up.
